Tendai Biti - Minister of Finance Zimbabwe

Minister Profile

Hon Tendai Biti
  • Born Tendai Laxton Biti on the 6th of August 1966.
  • Attended Gombo Primary School in Dzivarasekwa and Goromonzi High for Secondary education, where he was the Deputy Head boy for the year 1985.
  • Enrolled in the University Of Zimbabwe Law School in 1986.
  • Is a founding member for the Society for African Studies, Society For Modern Scientific Thoughts, and International Socialist Organization.
  • Co-founded Red Stars Football Club
  • Started Law practice with Honey and Blackenberg and was made a partner within two and half years, becoming the youngest partner ever, at the age of 26.
  • Has handled thousands of labour and human rights litigation representing large trade unions such as the Post and Telecommunications Trade Union.
  • On the 11th of June, defended the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions in court and succeeded in repealing section 6 of the Law and Order Maintenance Act, which does not allow anyone the right to demonstrate without police clearance.
  • Successfully defended women's rights, human rights (e.g. the case of Munyaradzi Gwisai - the lawyer who was segregated in law practice because of his dreadlocks) and various constitutional cases like those of Margaret Dongo and Ndabaningi Sithole.
  • For labour and employment cases, Honorable Biti successfully represented Zimbabwe Banks and Allied Workers Union, Commercial and Allied Services Workers Union, Zimbabwe Technical and Scientific Workers Union and the four Railways Unions.
  • Handled commercial and tax cases, e.g. the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange and RM insurance among others.
  • Led to amendments in women's laws for example, succeeded in advocating against expelling a pregnant woman from school and several inheritance cases.
  • Honourable Minister Biti has won several Human and Legal Rights awards over the years for his outstanding work as a lawyer.
  • He is a founding member of the Movement for Democratic Change that was formed in 1999 and was the party's Secretary for Land.
  • He crafted the "RESTART" - the economic blue print for MDC.
  • Is a founding member of National Constitutional Assembly.
  • Is the founding member of Zimbabwe Lawyers For Human Rights.
  • Elected Member of Parliament for Harare East Constituency in 2000.
  • Became Secretary General of the MDC in 2005.
  • During the Fifth Parliament, served as a member of Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Lands, Agriculture, Water Development, Rural Resources and Resettlement and that on Defence and Home Affairs.
  • Retained the Harare East Constituency in March 2005 elections. He served in the Portfolio Committee on Budget, Finance and Economic Development.
  • Re-elected to the House of Assembly in March 2008 Parliamentary elections, again representing Harare East Constituency.
  • Has been arrested every year since 2000 by the Zimbabwe Government on various charges under its repulsive laws such as POSA.
  • He was arrested in June 2008 for treason charges and was remanded for a month at the infamous Harare Remand.
  • Became Finance Minister in the Inclusive Government in February 2009.
